The last few weeks have been intense. With the pressure of sourcing ‘the’ perfect set of images for our new website, I’m starting to crack. We’ve gone through a truck load of submissions but we can’t seem to find the perfect fit.

Just because you’re running a start up doesn’t mean you should skimp out on a ‘professional image’. In fact, it’s an important component that will add further credibility to your business and your team. Whether you’re a B2B or B2C, you want people to take you seriously. Cropping a candid Facebook photo from your profile, just because you ‘like it’ – isn’t going to work.
You’ve spent years strategizing and invested thousands of dollars – why underwhelm your audience with second-rate headshots?
The recruitment dynamics at a start up company can be a precarious affair if it isn’t handled with a certain level of professionalism and discretion. Internally, your boss could very well be your HR contact. From an HR perspective, you want to attract great talent, avoid high turn over and offer dynamic compensation packages that can compete with larger organizations.
With regards to job seekers, chances are, your resume will be scrutinized and put under a microscope – how do you measure up? I reached out to Jason Bigue, Fonolo’s COO and our ‘HR Dept’ whose insight can be found after each section.
Think tank. Brainstorm. Conference. Powwow. Group huddle. Call it whatever you want but our new method to rewriting our content worked like a charm. For weeks we’ve been struggling with different ways to tackle our ‘new messaging’ project, which runs parallel with the web redesign.
I missed a post last week. Errrr, I feel guilty, horrible and I’ve let down my two followers. What can I say? I’ve been crazy busy. A few weeks ago, I discussed the importance of branding, after that, office bullying. Please excuse my blog ADD tendencies but with a long laundry list of things to do, it’s hard to wrap my head around new topics for the Fonolo post. Here’s a startup reality check: Working with a small team could very well equate to an insane workload. I’m taking a quick breather to update you on what has my nose pressed against the keyboard.
The other day, I was in an impromptu meeting with one of my colleagues when Shai hovered over my shoulder, anxious to have his blog post edited – right away. Jokingly, we called him a hoverer, chastised him about being a micromanager (which he’s not) and had a really good laugh. All day we took jabs at one another – ok, I took jabs at everyone – about being bullies. The reality is, we have a family vibe at Fonolo, so our teasing is comparable to how siblings would act – it’s all out of love.

What’s Your Brand Fashion Style?
Shortly after I joined Fonolo, I suggested the company revitalize their brand. As a newbie, it was tough to come in and immediately shake things up. However, it was necessary. Fonolo was one of the finalists for the ‘Best in Show Award’ at the Enterprise Connect Conference in Orlando and quite frankly, our brand needed some TLC.
I think it’s important for brands to revaluate their image and how it impacts key components of their business. There’s a visual and technological evolution that start-ups tend to overlook – busy working on other projects, business development, administrative, resources – the ‘to do’ list is endless but ignoring your brand can kill your company.
I’m no stranger to start-up companies; I’ve had my fair share of big companies, egos, and political red tape. Working for a small company can be both challenging and rewarding. The team at Fonolo adopts a work hard and work harder philosophy. However, daily entertainment can be found in everyone’s idiosyncrasies.
Do you find yourself grappling with whether or not to work for a start up? It’s like being in an elevator for 8 hrs with the same people – every day. Or in Shai’s opinion – a fish bowl. Come to think of it, visuals of fish seem to pop up a lot in presentations. I wonder if there is a subliminal message we should be aware of.
To kick off Fonolo’s Fiscal Year, Shai asked everyone to bring in silly hats. As newbies, Omar and I were the only ones (suckers) who actually followed through with tacky hats in hand but neither one of us actually wore them – probably out of fear from this video embedded in Shai’s presentation:
Chris joked about how quickly our meeting got derailed. In all seriousness, Fonolo made great leaps and bounds so far. Here are some of our Q1 accomplishments:
Excitement. Anticipation. Sugar Rush.
These are just a few thoughts that come to mind while I get ready for the upcoming Enterprise Connect Conference in Orlando, FL. As one of the newest members of the Fonolo team, I’m excited to have been brought in at such a vital time.
I’ve been busy with creating new marketing collateral which I’ll be unveiling at next week’s conference. Here’s a pic of the chaos on my desk – a sneak peek of the new banners, a product sheet and an info post card. (In the background is Shai being a little shy.)
I mentioned in an earlier blog that Fonolo was nominated for the prestigious Best of Enterprise Connect Award. As we get closer to the March 28 announcement date, the office is buzzing in anticipation of the outcome!
If you’re attending the Enterprise Connect Conference, we’d love for you to drop by booth #1429, meet a few of our team members and pick up some of our new material. I’ll be there with Shai Berger and Chris McLean.
We think Fonolo is a sweet deal, for companies and their consumers. So while you munch on one of our chocolate bars, we’ll show you how we can take the ‘crunch’ out of call center costs …
